The Water for Good Way

A Healthy Village is a Thriving Village

Vision of a Healthy Village (VHV) is Water for Good’s unique holistic approach and model for solving the water crisis by transforming communities one-by-one. Developed from over 45 years of experience in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) work, our strategy emphasizes community involvement, empowering them to take charge of their own transformation.

In our model of change, local villagers become health heroes as they receive training to champion sanitation and hygiene in their own communities. In each area where we work, on average, 150 local people will spend over 50,000 hours training their neighbors on sanitation and hygiene. The VHV process takes three years to complete.

We have seen a remarkable 90% or more reduction in diseases related to unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene in areas that have completed the VHV process. Families are healthier and communities are thriving!

Key practices of Vision of a Healthy Village include use of latrines, handwashing with soap, constructing drying racks for dishes, and maintaining clean household environments. By integrating these simple, cost-effective habits, the program helps prevent water contamination and reduces disease, fostering sustainable health improvements and a healthier, flourishing village.

Sustainability is the first step

Sustainability is the first step

Our work isn’t about creating a temporary solution, it’s about establishing sustainable change. That’s why we come alongside the communities we serve and equip them to sustain the changes we make together.

We intentionally take a long-term perspective in our work, beginning with the end in mind. We prioritize careful planning, assessing needs, developing a genuine understanding of the population, and discerning the right location for projects.

We also make sure local leadership is driving the strategy and carrying out the execution of the project. When the community maintains ownership of the water point and WASH practices, long-lasting sustainability change happens.

It’s not just drilling wells, it’s raising well-being

Reducing WASH-related diseases starts with clean water sources. But dependable, life-giving water needs more. It needs clean environments, healthy homes, expert maintenance and community involvement.

Change takes innovation and collaboration

Change takes innovation and collaboration

We provide high quality water projects that utilize advanced engineering and technology wherever possible to maintain a high standard of uniquely contextualized service for the communities we serve.

But more than that, we are intentional about remaining open-minded and embracing new ideas, because we know the best way now may not be the best way tomorrow. The way we get there might look different from one community to another.

No matter the project, we work to embrace the most efficient, high-quality approach so that we can facilitate the best long-term outcomes for the people we serve. We also welcome collaboration for the same reason, knowing that while we certainly have a deep well of expertise, we can learn from one another’s unique experiences and perspectives.

Well maintenance is essential to our work

Well maintenance is essential to our work

Reliable water requires monitoring and maintenance. For water to be reliable, it has to be consistently accessible. This requires ongoing monitoring and maintenance to ensure water points are functioning properly long after implementation.

Many organizations only focus on implementation, which means wells are often left broken or abandoned later on, and communities are left even more devastated. We refuse to let this happen. We work toward sustainability by ensuring quality ongoing maintenance, even for systems installed prior to our involvement. This is evident in the fact that our water point functionality rate is 90%, compared to the sector average of 60%.

Local leaders establish healthy habits and routines

Local leaders establish healthy habits and routines

Access to safe, reliable water is only the beginning to establishing long-term change. That’s why we invest in knowledge as much as we do technology. The most important way we do this is by partnering with local community leaders to become WASH facilitators.

WASH is an acronym that stands for water access, sanitation, and hygiene. When these three disciplines are effectively implemented, WASH-related diseases are significantly decreased. These community facilitators go door-to-door to teach friends, neighbors, and families about the importance of ongoing sanitation and hygiene practices.

These facilitators are provided with a follow-up plan to help households achieve certified “healthy home” status, which in turn inspires others in the community to do the same.
