Before Water For Good worked in her village in Uganda, 13-year-old Maureen would journey to a swamp to gather water. It was a dangerous journey walking through sugarcane plantations. Snakes were in the water and last year another girl was bitten by a snake and died while fetching water. Maureen also knew of young girls who were attacked in the sugarcane fields.
“Cattle and goats drank from the same swamp we drank from, and we had stomach aches,” Maureen’s grandmother, Nangobi, said. “We walked so far in search of safe water; the water was brown, salty, and in the evenings, it became pale like milk.”
But today, Maureen no longer fears for her safety. Grandmother Nangobi no longer fears for her health.
In 2018, Water For Good donors gave to fund a well in their village. Water For Good staff shared vital health and sanitation practices and shared the love of Jesus with every family.
“We felt at peace when we first received the new well,” Elizabeth, Maureen’s mother said. “We danced and sang and celebrated.”
Maureen said “In the future, I hope to work for Water For Good!” she announced. I have seen how they save lives, and I have seen how they care for our communities. I may even become a nurse one day; I want to help others.”
