How Safe Water Unlocks Children's Dreams in Uganda

Every child dreams of who they want to be when they grow up. Ask a little boy or girl on any given day, and their answers might change—an astronaut, a teacher, a CEO, a parent, or the president of their country. But for some children, dreaming of a big future isn’t an option. The fight for survival consumes them. For children like Janet, a 10-year-old girl in Uganda, the daily search for safe water crushed her spirit—and her dreams.

A Heavy Burden

As the oldest child in her family, Janet carried the heavy burden of collecting water for her family every day. Each morning, she walked an hour to a swamp to fetch water—water that was unsafe to drink and physically risky to gather. The danger forced her to wait for neighbors or friends to accompany her, which often made her late for school. This lack of safe, reliable water disrupted every aspect of her life.

Her education faltered. She missed classes and struggled to keep up with her peers. The contaminated water frequently made her sick, forcing her to stay home and straining her family with mounting medical expenses. Janet vividly recalls those days:

“I did not have any dreams in those days because I did not attend my school properly. I couldn’t even pass from grade to grade.”

Lives Transformed by Safe Water

In May 2024, everything changed when Water for Good arrived in Janet’s community. The WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) program brought clean water and sanitation facilities to her school and neighborhood. At her primary school, Water for Good constructed a new latrine and handwashing station, equipping students with the tools they need for hygiene and health. Near her home, Water for Good installed a hand pump well, giving Janet’s family access to safe, reliable water for the first time.

These changes revolutionized Janet’s daily life. The long, dangerous walks for water ended. Janet now arrives at school early, full of energy and eager to learn. Her health improved, along with her confidence and excitement for the future. With a radiant smile, she shares:

“Now I am attending school regularly. I do not get sick because of the water. I started dreaming about my future. I want to be a journalist and see myself on CNN.”

Building a Foundation for Generations

Janet’s story demonstrates Water for Good’s mission in action. Every child deserves safe water, a healthy community, and the love of God. Delivering sustainable, long-term solutions transforms lives, unlocking children’s potential to dream of brighter futures.

Because Water for Good focuses on sustainability, these changes are not temporary fixes but lasting solutions. By investing in durable, high-quality interventions, a foundation grows for generations to thrive. Janet’s story proves these efforts make a tangible, enduring difference.
