Here is a look at the different systems we use to provide clean water across the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, and Cambodia.
Solar Power and Motorized Systems
In large communities where thousands of people rely on a single source, a manual pump simply cannot keep up. In these areas, we install motorized systems that do the heavy lifting, moving large volumes of water efficiently.
To make these systems sustainable, we look to the sky. We often integrate solar panels to power the pumps. This harnesses abundant natural energy to ensure a steady water supply without the need for expensive fuel or inconsistent power grids.
Water Storage Towers
In places like Tanzania, getting water to the surface is only the first step. We utilize elevated water storage towers to help with distribution.
By pumping water into these high capacity tanks, we can use the natural pull of gravity to move water through a network of pipes. This creates a pressurized system that can serve multiple tap stands at once, reaching schools, clinics, and neighborhoods far from the original source.
Innovation with Foot Pumps
Adaptability is the key to long term success. In the Central African Republic (CAR), we often utilize foot pumps.
Unlike traditional hand pumps that rely on upper body strength, these allow users to use their body weight and leg strength to lift water. This design is often more ergonomic and efficient for community members who are filling several heavy containers to carry home.
Boreholes and Lined Wells
When a spring is not available on the surface, we go underground to find a reliable supply.
- Boreholes: These are deep, narrow holes drilled into the earth to reach aquifers that stay full even during long dry seasons.
- Lined Hand-Dug Wells: These are traditional wells reinforced with concrete rings. This prevents the walls from collapsing and seals out contaminated surface water. We cap these with a pump to keep the water protected from the elements.
Protected Springs and Gravity Pipelines
A protected spring is one of the most natural ways to provide clean water. We encase the source in a masonry “spring box” to prevent contamination from animals or rain runoff.
Whenever the landscape allows, we use elevation to our advantage. Gravity fed pipelines can move this water directly to the heart of a village. It is a simple and effective solution that requires zero electricity to operate.
