Every year on March 4th, the world celebrates World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, an initiative established by UNESCO in 2020. This day highlights the critical role engineers play in building a more sustainable future and improving global infrastructure. From designing clean water systems to advancing renewable energy solutions, engineers drive innovation that directly impacts peoples’ lives.
At Water for Good, our engineers are at the heart of our mission to provide safe, reliable water to the communities we serve. For this year’s World Engineering Day, we’re sharing the story of one of our engineers whose dedication and expertise are making a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Meet Wondiye, an Engineering Team Leader at Water for Good
What is your current role at Water for Good?
I serve as the Engineering Team Leader for the Dodola program in Ethiopia, overseeing projects that bring sustainable water solutions to rural communities.
How long have you been with Water for Good?
I joined Water for Good in the fall of 2020 and have been working on various water access projects ever since.
What inspired you to become an engineer?
I grew up in a town with good infrastructure, but during my childhood, my family was displaced due to the war between Ethiopia and Somalia. Moving to a remote rural area, I saw firsthand the difficulties of living without safe water and reliable roads.
When I was nine, I watched a road being built and saw engineers at work. I realized then that these essential infrastructures were not just naturally occurring but carefully designed and constructed. This sparked my curiosity, and I began to dream of becoming an engineer, hoping to one day contribute to solving these challenges for others.
What’s the most innovative solution you’ve applied in your work?
I often compare multiple design options and assess their technical and financial feasibility before making recommendations. This approach ensures that decision-makers choose the most sustainable and cost-effective solutions.
When did you become interested in WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)?
In 2008, I worked with a local NGO on disaster risk reduction in rural communities. Our focus was on rainwater collection and storage to sustain people through dry seasons. Due to the lack of safe water sources, we had to implement emergency WASH interventions, such as water rationing and purification. These experiences deepened my commitment to addressing water access challenges.
What has been your favorite part of being an engineer in the WASH sector?
I love designing water supply systems and overseeing their construction. Seeing the immediate impact on people’s lives—whether providing safe drinking water or improving sanitation in schools—motivates me to keep going. Knowing that my technical skills directly improve health and quality of life is incredibly fulfilling.
What is the biggest challenge you face as a WASH engineer?
One of the biggest challenges is working in areas without access to potable water sources, requiring us to transport water over long distances. Changing community hygiene behaviors also takes time. Additionally, ensuring long-term sustainability after project completion remains a key challenge.
How do you involve local communities in your work?
I engage communities from the beginning—during site selection, planning, and even design discussions. I also ensure that water points and sanitation facilities are accessible to people with disabilities. Their insights and contributions are crucial for project success.
Is there a specific project that has been particularly meaningful to you?
The Vision Health Village (VHV) project has been incredibly impactful. This initiative aims to develop a water point for every sub-village in Kebele, a large-scale effort unmatched by any other NGO in Ethiopia. Over the past four years, I have been involved in the implementation of around 150 water points, nearly double the number I had worked on before joining Water for Good. The sustainability measures we’ve put in place are also setting an important example for others.
How important is engineering to Water for Good’s work?
Engineering is essential to everything we do—from drilling wells to designing water systems and sanitation facilities. None of these projects would be possible without engineering expertise.
What future advancements in engineering excite you most for the WASH sector?
- Solar-powered water pumps and purification systems, which provide cost-effective, sustainable solutions in remote areas.
- Smart water management systems that detect leaks, monitor water quality, and improve distribution efficiency.
What inspires you to keep going when you face challenges in the field?
I see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Each obstacle teaches me how to become a better engineer and problem-solver. Knowing that my work is improving lives keeps me motivated.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in WASH engineering?
- Be honest—integrity is crucial in this field.
- Stay community-oriented—always consider the people you’re serving.
- Be curious and keep learning—innovation is key to solving water challenges.
