The Narrative of Change: Our 2025 Impact Report

An impact report is one of the most important documents a nonprofit can produce. It is more than a recap; it is a testament to what happens when an organization truly believes in its mission and the fruit of that mission. When I sat down to read through our 2025 report cohesively, the theme stuck with me most.

The “ripple effect” was an intentional creative direction in this year’s report, and it feels like an accurate description of what goes on behind the numbers. For the water crisis to be eradicated, even at a micro level in just one village, it takes a single initiating event, and then a ripple of deliberate, rising action. If the stories in the report read like a narrative, there’s a reason for that.

In the communities where we begin our work, the daily reality is a cycle of crisis that no person should have to navigate. It is a story of mothers walking miles for a basic physiological need and empty desks at the local school when illness strikes. Behind the statistics are families forced to choose between health and other essential needs because the source of the problem is still waiting for a solution.

 Enter: Water

Just like a story, the course of the narrative begins to change. New characters are introduced: Safe Wafer, Improved Sanitation, and Hygiene Education. These characters are reliable and sustainable. One by one, the village takes them in, accepting them as their own. The ripple grows and widens.

But it’s the partnership that creates the lasting change. The new characters and the established ones (the community) put in the daily work to understand, adopt, change, challenge, build, and grow. Hand in hand, the ripple becomes a wave, the wave becomes a movement, and the water crisis becomes a thing of the past.

I see this story clearly throughout the 2025 report. I see it in stories of transformation where hope is no longer on the horizon, but right at the front door. I see it in the data from our work across five countries: hundreds of healthy homes, latrines in schools, and communities declared open-defecation free.

And I see this story in our partnerships with donors and businesses, big and small. These relationships are the catalyst for everything else; they provide the resources that allow the ‘new characters’ of water, sanitation, and hygiene to enter the story in the first place. Our partners understand that our collective reach is only as strong as the commitment we make together to these communities.

In this story, your partnership is the initiating event that starts the ripple. The water crisis may be the beginning of the narrative, but together with these communities, we are writing a new story of hope, health, and happiness.
