For millions of people around the world, lack of access to safe water isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a daily struggle that impacts health, opportunity, and survival. Zeyneba, a 25-year-old mother from Ethiopia, knows this reality all too well. Before her village had a reliable water source, her daily life was marked by long walks for water, illness, and limited opportunities.
Zeyneba and her family relied on a contaminated spring nearly 40 minutes away from their home on foot. The water wasn’t safe to drink, yet their community had no other choice. Frequent waterborne illnesses drained Zeyneba’s family’s health and finances, making it difficult to afford food, medical care, and other necessities.
To make matters worse, Zeyneba spent hours each day collecting water—a time-consuming task that kept her from pursuing work or focusing on her family’s well-being. The cycle of hardship seemed like it would never end.
A Well That Changed Everything
A turning point in her life came when Water for Good brought lasting change through a water access point in her village. A newly hand-dug well, just 200 meters from Zeyneba’s home, now provides safe, reliable water for 28 households in her village. But the impact didn’t stop there.
Along with the well, Water for Good introduced essential hygiene and sanitation training. Zeyneba and her community learned about safe water storage, handwashing, and maintaining a clean home environment—simple practices that dramatically reduced illness and improved overall health.
Empowering Women for a Better Future
With her family healthier and no longer burdened by daily water collection, Zeyneba gained something invaluable—time. She used this newfound freedom to start a small business selling fresh produce, creating a stable source of income to help support her family.
Now, instead of worrying about waterborne diseases, she dreams of a future filled with opportunity. With her husband, she plans to expand their efforts, growing their own vegetables and building a thriving business.
