Every Child Belongs in School. Safe Water Gets Them There.
As a new school year begins, students all across the world are excited to go back to school—they are eager to sit at their desks, see their teachers, learn and play alongside their friends. At the same time, thousands of students in Tanzania are missing foundational things they need to get back to the classroom—access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Without it, children are forced out of the classroom to collect dirty water that makes them sick. It’s a reality that robs them of their education, keeping them away from the schooling they are so eager to receive.

The Water Behind the Grades
When school test scores started dropping in areas of Shinyanga, Tanzania, local leaders launched an environmental study to find out why. Regional Commissioner Mboni Mhita shared with us that the data revealed a clear culprit: the schools with the lowest grades consistently lacked access to safe water.
When water is miles away, young girls bear the heaviest burden, spending their mornings walking for water instead of sitting at their desks. But Commissioner Mhita also saw what happens when the reverse is true. Clean water changes that.
When we partner with local teams to bring reliable, safe water, sanitation, and hygiene directly to a school campus, everything shifts. Attendance skyrockets as kids trade long walks for time in the classroom. Girls reclaim their seats as leaders with the time, dignity, and safety to focus on their education, and grades rise as a direct result of consistent school days. Safe water has the power to unlock a student’s true potential.
