Sustainable access to safe water brings about transformative changes in the lives of women and children.
Obore, a 42-year-old woman, resides in a rural area of Ethiopia. Besides being a community resident, she holds the distinguished role of treasurer in her village’s water committee. The committee was formed with the assistance of local workers from after the installation of a reliable water source by Water for Good.
In her region, women bore the responsibility of fetching water from far-off sources, regardless of the distance from their homes. Therefore, having a nearby source of safe and clean water carries significant importance for women like Obore. This is evident in her willingness to serve as a treasurer in the water committee of her community.
As the treasurer, Obore has enthusiastically undertaken every responsibility assigned to her. She is pleased to talk about the positive impact safe water has had on the lives of households in her village, including her own!
The committee members received training from Water for Good to learn about their roles and responsibilities, financial management, bookkeeping, as well as the operation and maintenance of their water source. They also encouraged the community to construct a fence around the water source to protect it from tampering.
“You provided our village with clean water, which has relieved us from the exhausting task of fetching polluted water from the river. Moreover, it has protected us from the negative health effects associated with consuming such water,” says Obore.
As a result of their dedicated efforts, the water source is functioning well without any breakages. This has led to significant improvements in the village, as women and children no longer have to collect contaminated water from the river. The new water source is reliable, allowing every family in the village to easily meet their water needs at home.
