The global water crisis has often been referred to as a problem of access. Indeed, the need is urgent: hundreds of millions of people still lack basic access to safe water, and even more live without adequate sanitation.
But experience has taught us something deeper: that access alone is not enough.
Across sub-Saharan Africa, nearly a quarter of water points are not working at any given time. Systems break down. Uptime data is incomplete. Communities are left without reliable service.
What’s missing is not just infrastructure; it’s training, strong maintenance systems, local capacity, and long-term accountability. That is why we are investing in a growing part of our work: Technical Assistance.
Moving Beyond Projects to Lasting Systems
Technical Assistance is about coming alongside governments, NGOs, and partners to share expertise, strengthen systems, and ensure that water and sanitation solutions last.
It includes:
- Practical engineering support
- Training and capacity building
- Systems design and improvement
- Ongoing guidance grounded in real-world experience
At Water for Good, we see Technical Assistance not as a separate offering, but as a natural extension of our mission: to transform lives through sustainable access to safe water, improved sanitation, and hygiene in the places that need it most. Our plan is simple – to take what we know works and help others make it work, also.
Built on What We’ve Learned
For nearly 50 years, we have worked in some of the most challenging contexts, learning what it takes to build systems that endure.
We’ve learned that:
- Strong engineering must be paired with community ownership
- Operations and maintenance systems must support infrastructure
- Behaviour change is essential for health outcomes
- Real-time data is critical for accountability and improvement
Technical Assistance allows us to share these lessons in ways that are practical, adaptable, and rooted in partnership.

Addressing the Gaps That Hold Systems Back
Too often, water projects fail because key pieces are missing. Our Technical Assistance model focuses on strengthening these critical areas:
- Stronger Water Systems
We support partners with engineering design, quality assurance, and construction oversight to ensure infrastructure is built right from the beginning. - Sustainability That Lasts
We help design and implement systems for operation and maintenance, so water keeps flowing long after a project is finished. - Health Through Behavior Change
We work alongside partners to integrate sanitation and hygiene, ensuring communities not only have access to water, but also the knowledge to stay healthy. - Data That Drives Decisions
We equip partners with tools and training to collect and use data—making it possible to monitor performance and improve over time.
These are not separate efforts. Together, they form a complete system that supports reliable access to water.

Partnership at the Center
We believe lasting change happens when locals are equipped to lead.
Through Technical Assistance, we partner with:
- Governments working to strengthen national systems
- NGOs expanding their impact
- Private sector actors contributing to long-term sustainability
Our role is not to replace local leadership but to support, strengthen, and walk alongside them.
What This Means for the Future
Technical Assistance allows us to multiply impact in a new way.
Instead of only implementing projects directly, we can now:
- Help others avoid common pitfalls
- Strengthen systems across entire regions and countries
- Scale proven approaches more quickly and sustainably
This is how we move from isolated success stories to lasting, system-wide change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will you be providing technical assistance outside of the five countries you currently work in?
- Answer: We can provide technical assistance on projects outside of our current countries of operation; however, we are not able to directly implement infrastructure or water sources in those locations except in the countries we work in.
Who can benefit from Technical Assistance?
- Answer: Our Technical Assistance services are designed for governments, NGOs, Donors, and other WASH partners who want to strengthen their water, sanitation, and hygiene programs and build systems that last.
Is this a one-size-fits-all approach?
- Answer: No. Every context is different. We tailor our support to the needs of each partner, drawing on what we’ve learned while adapting to local realities.
Can you support both new and existing projects?
- Answer: Yes. We can support at any stage—whether you are designing a new initiative or strengthening an existing system or even designing and piloting sustainability model for systems that have been around for a long time.
Why focus on Technical Assistance now?
- Answer: Because the need is not only more water points but for water systems that last. Technical Assistance helps ensure that communities continue to have reliable access to safe water for years to come.
