Melba wanted water.
When he turned eight, Melba asked his parents a simple question:
“Instead of a party, can we use the money to help kids in Kokosa get clean water?”
It wasn’t random. Melba had grown up hearing his dad’s stories of walking miles for water as a boy in rural Ethiopia. He knew the struggle was real.
So, with his family’s support, Melba donated his birthday — and $5,000 — to help build a new water point in his dad’s home village. That gift brought safe water to 378 people.
Months later, Melba traveled with his family to Ethiopia to celebrate with the community. The day was filled with singing, dancing, and gratitude. One 8-year-old boy from the village said: “Before this, I missed school because I had to walk for water. Now I can go every day. Thank you, Melba.”
